What a pro does

A dark screen is very often batteries, and that gets ruled out in a minute. After that a technician follows the low-voltage wiring end to end, because a corroded terminal or a wire nicked years ago behind old plaster makes a healthy thermostat look dead. Smart thermostats retrofitted onto old equipment fail a particular way. Without a common wire they steal power through the heat call, brown out, and reset in a loop, which reads to a homeowner as a broken furnace. A thermostat displaying the wrong temperature is usually mounted somewhere misleading: an exterior wall, a sunny spot, or right above a register. Swapping the unit won't repair the wiring beneath it.
